While smartphones are becoming more resilient, and cases can protect them from a significant beating, dropping one into a Seal Sanctuary’s tank usually signals the end. Unless that tank happens to be occupied by the world’s most helpful otter, that is.
Starsky, an Asian short-clawed otter at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, quickly retrieved a smartphone after it was accidentally dropped into a pool by a member of the staff. He dove down to the depths of the tank and came to the surface moments later with the brightly coloured device clutched between his paws.
Rather than keeping the phone for himself, or cracking it open with a rock, Starsky handed it back to animal care assistant Jenny Lewis. We’re guessing he’s playing the long game and will be rewarded for his act of kindness.
Starsky usually sticks to juggling stones and climbing up the mesh side of his enclosure. And apparently, he’s too shy to come out alone. Luckily, he is joined by his brother Hutch, and a third otter named Huggy Bear.
