OnePlus planned to help its One handset stand out with the release of stylish covers that could be swapped out. However, these plans have been cancelled amid concerns over quality.
The StyleSwap covers, made from materials such as bamboo or Kevlar, would take the place of the plastic back cover that adorns the phone. In a forum post, a representative of OnePlus explained why many customers will not have the opportunity to purchase such a cover.
As the company noted before, OnePlus was experiencing technical difficulties in mass producing the StyleSwap covers at an acceptable level of quality. The number of Bamboo StyleSwap covers that passed Quality Assurance tests was “much lower than we had hoped.” The post added that the process of removing covers needs to be better, as doing so frequently can leave the back cover loose.
OnePlus still plans to release a limited quantity of bamboo and Kevlar covers that have been produced successfully. You may be better off waiting until the release of the OnePlus Two, which may be redesigned to better accommodate swapping covers. And hopefully OnePlus will sort out its production issues by then.
