Almost 5 billion devices will be connected to networks or the internet by the end of this year, according to international technology research firm, Gartner. This is an increase of about 33% on last year.
The company made a number of predictions regarding connected devices. It says that the number of connected devices will rise to approximately 25 billion by the end of the century. It’s unlikely that Gartner will be called out if they get this wrong.
Gartner also predicted that the Internet of Things will make a significant impact on the kitchen. It states that the food and beverage industry will save 15% by 2020 thanks to connected devices. Those in the catering industry will be able to utilise real-time inventory data collection together and big data analytics to make their supply chain management more efficient.
However, it will take some time for the Internet of Things to settle down. Gartner estimates that it will take until 2018 before a dominant platform is decided upon. Until then, it says, multiple providers will compete, with some vendors and ecosystems likely to fail.
