Samsung Dominates Expanding Smartwatch Market
Galaxy Gear dominating market

With the smartwatch and wearable technology spaces set to see major growth in the coming years, especially if Apple jumps aboard, as widely expected, this September with it's long rumoured iWatch, the sector is going to become increasingly lucrative for manufacturers - and one company that's got a major head start on the competition is Samsung, who are proving to be dominant in sales to date.

The company's Galaxy Gear smartwatch now makes up for an astonishing 70% of the global smartwatch market, which suggests that anyone attempting to make a late entry into the sector may just have their work cut out for them.

In the first three months of 2014 alone, the amount of smartwatches shipped globally has increased almost three fold, showing that consumers are finally starting to come around to the idea of pairing their smartphones up to a wearable wristband in order to control some of the most commonly used features of their devices.

On the other side of the market, companies like LG, Nike and Fitbit have been pushing hard on fitness driven devices, which allow users to track their exercise regiments and keep tabs on things like distance travelled and heart rate - although it looks like both traditional and fitness based smartwatches will ultimately come together in the near future, particularly as more app developers start to turn their attention to the devices.
