To the surprise of no one, Samsung just showed off the Galaxy S6 and threw in some Edge as well...
The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge were just shown off for the first time at the company's #UNPACKED event the day before Mobile World Congress kicks off in Barcelona. And its all change for the Korean tech giants, at least in terms of design.
Samsung's premium range has been criticised in the past for its plastic construction and, with falling profits in 2014, the company has obviously listened. They set out to create a handset which looks like its worth the asking price, and it looks like they've suceeded. Both phones are now crafted from metal and glass, with smooth lines that might remind you subtly of past Samsung handsets, but with a new layer of sophistication. Aluminium and Gorilla Glass 4 make all the difference.
Samsung has always had great specs, and that's set to continue - there's a 5.1 inc Quaad HD Super AMOLED screen and octa-core chipsets for maximum processing power, plus 3 gigs of RAM. The specs are the same, the difference is all in the look. Last year, Samsung made a big splash with the Galaxy Note Edge which included a curved screen on one side of the display - showing off notifications, etc. And now people are going loopy for the Galaxy S6 Edge.
Partly, that's because smartphones have become all but stagnant in terms of looks in recent years - especially those from the Samsung camp. Just a little bit of difference is enough to get some serious attention, and that should work in their favour for the new handset. The curve on the S6 Edge is much more subtle than on the Note variant and on both sides of the display. In some ways, its more about making the device easier to hold and early reports are good - plus it looks absolutely stunning.
Therre are some new additions which are less welcome. One thing I'm genuinely surprised Samsung left out was the ability to add extra storage via microSD. As someone who swapped to the Galaxy S4 specifically so I could add more storage, it seems like a foolish move. Likewise, you won't be able to remove the battery in either of these handsets - something which purists have always liked about Samsung, especially with the apalling battery life of most smartphones. Also, there's no water or dustproofing in these units, but you wouldn't want to get them wet anyway, would you?
The Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will launch in April 2015. Price TBC.
