Samsung reportedly developing standalone smartwatch
Samsung is reported to be developing a smartwatch capable of tracking fitness data, making calls and receiving data without being connected to a smartphone.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Samsung is producing a smartwatch with a built-in camera, GPS, and heart-rate monitor. The core offering of the smartwatch is that it will be capable of some of the key features of a smartphone without being reliant on being connected to a phone.

However, there is a catch. Such a device would require a SIM card and, more than likely, a data plan of its own. The key question is, will people be willing to make that kind of an investment?

If this report proves to be true, it will be Samsung’s third smartwatch in less than a year. That’s a clear indication that Samsung believes wearable technology is the future.

It is being suggested that Samsung is aiming for a June or July unveiling and that the South Korean company is currently negotiating with carriers in Europe, North America, and South Korea.
