Skype Translator now available to preview

Microsoft showed off Skype Translator’s real-time translation capabilities last year. Now you can try it for yourself.

Skype Translator’s preview version can be downloaded from the Windows Store. It’s available for your Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 preview PC or tablet.

The software currently supports four spoken languages - English, Spanish, Italian, Mandarin. It allows two speakers to talk in their native language with speech translated in near real-time.

Skype Translator also has text translations for 50 languages in instant messages, from Arabic to Yucatec Maya. You can write a message and your chat buddy will receive it in their native language.

The service was previously made available to preview in December 2014. But now it’s easier than ever for anyone to take advantage of its capabilities.

One early adopter highlighted by Skype is Pro Mujer, which is a non-profit development organization dedicated to providing women in Latin America with vital financial, health, and human development services. You can see the role that Skype Translator played in this mission in the video below.

Download Skype Translator from the Windows Store.
