Sony teases CES smartphone announcement

Sony teases CES smartphone announcement

Sony will be attending CES in January and will have a smartphone announcement of some sort to make, according to a new teaser.

The company released a video teaser for an Xperia smartphone. The handset is likely to be announced at a Sony press event on January 5th.

While the video doesn’t give any official specs away, it drops some pretty unsubtle hints. It references the number 5 several times, even going so far as to include a big red lollipop, indicating that the Xperia handset will run Android 5. The thinness of the device is emphasised right off the bat, while vibrant and colourful visuals make frequent appearances.

It’s unclear if this tease is for a completely new Xperia handset or if it is simply going to broaden its horizons with the Xperia Z3. The Verge believes that Sony will announce an upgraded version of the handset running Android Lollipop, which will be available via AT&T.

Sony typically holds off on brand new smartphone announcements until Mobile World Congress in February, but at least we don’t have long to wait.
