Viber is one of the world's most popular ways to communicate, with over 200 million people regularly using the app to send messages to anyone else on the service - for the price of free! Now the company is introducing new functionality which will allow users to broadcast their thoughts to everyone, making it more like a bit of a social network.
Public Chats will be live streams of messages from users you can follow, and its being launched with a string of fairly famous folks. So you'll soon be able to see Viber messages from the likes of Pixie Lott and Perez Hilton, should you see so inclined.
You won't be able to chat back to these users unless they're already connected to you but presumably there will be some kind of access to allow you to like or share their words. Users will choose who to follow in an entirely separate part of the app, which won't get in the way of your regular private conversations.
At launch, you won't be able to just stream everything to this massive user base - initially only those who are invited will get access to this functionality, though it might well be open to all in the future. Right now, its a curated list of interesting people. So get ready to hear a lot from them.
