Most of us dread dropping our smartphones at a height of a couple of feet, but Urban Armor Gear was willing to drop its from 100,000 feet. Of course, the iPhone was protected by one of the company’s own cases for this test.
The iPhone’s flight rig was made up of two GoPro cameras, a GPS locator and a backup phone with GPS and active tracking installed. Naturally, it was also equipped with a parachute so that the stunt couldn’t turn deadly.
Urban Armor Gear then sent the iPhone into the stratosphere. It reached a height of more than 101,000 feet, endured temperatures of -62 ºC and winds as strong as 70 MPH. It’s an interesting video, but it’s worth noting that it contains a lot of spinning.
While the iPhone shut itself off mid-flight, it landed safe and sound, and in full working condition. The flight rig looks like it could have used some added protection.
