WhatsApp to show when a message is read

WhatsApp is to become the latest messaging service to let you know that someone read your message, but hasn’t bothered responding.

WhatsApp currently uses a two-tick system to showcase that a message has firstly been sent and then received. These ticks will now turn blue when the message has been read. In group chats, the tick will only turn blue once all chat members have read the message.

The feature is being rolled out to users now and there is no way to turn it off. The blue tick feature, as some on Twitter have pointed out, removes the point in having the ‘Last Seen’ feature switched off.

Of course, this means that WhatsApp users will no longer be able to say that they didn't see a message, unless they have a way to preview it first. Expect memes of awkward exchanges with one side met by abrubpt silence any day now.

WhatsApp is also currently working on implementing additional features, including voice calls.
