World's first 4K TV channel launches

Prepare to enjoy festival coverage in higher definition than ever before. The Dutch Brava Media group is launching its Festival 4K channel, which is now available for TV distributors around the world.

The new channel will showcase festivals, concerts and theater productions in native 4k/8K quality. Programming will range from pop and rock to modern circus, and opera. It promises "at least 4320 by 2160" resolution while most UHD TVs are 3840 by 2160. There is also the promise of 8K video later once the technology becomes more readily available and practical.

Festival 4K runs for six hours a day, which is looped. The Dutch company hopes that it will have round the clock material by 2017, and plans to increase to 12 hours of content per day next year.

Festival 4K is now available for TV distributors around the world. There is the possibility that it will broadcast on Astra, which would allow people to tune into it using their satellite dish, while Sky may offer it when it launches its own 4K channel later this year.
