You can adopt an emoji for $100

The Unicode Consortium is giving you the chance to "adopt" your favourite emoji for $100.

It's all part of its Adopt a Character campaign and donations will be used to support the world's languages. Money raised will be used to support the Unicode Consortium's work in making modern software and computing systems support the widest range of human languages.

There are three tiers of support: gold ($100), silver ($1,000), and gold ($5,000). The upper tiers are aimed at businesses; gold means that you are the sole adopter of a particular emoji for 12 months. A business can also attach a hyperlink to its sponsorship listing.

All sponsors will be acknowledged as Sponsors of Adopted Characters with their level of support, and will receive a certificate for their character.

It would certainly qualify as a different sort of gift for Christmas, if you do know someone that you think of immediately when you see a particular emoji.
