Maybe the British recognise funny Irish sitcoms better than we do ourselves, given they plucked both Father Ted and Mrs Brown’s Boys from nigh-on obscurity and made them huge successes. Once again, Brendan O’Carroll has been victorious with his drag granny act. Not only is Mrs Brown’s Boys one of the highest rating shows on British and Irish TV, but on Tuesday night O’Carroll won the prize for Best Comedic Performance from the Royal Television Society.
Nominated in the same category as O’Carroll were Rebecca Front in Psychobitches and Ryan Sampson in PLEBS. Another Irish contribution to the society was Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders, which walked away with the award for Best Drama Series, beating My Mad Fat Diary and Utopia.
