Penny Dreadful is a show set in an alternative Victorian London where Dorian Gray rubs shoulders with Frankenstein's monster and some slithery looking vampires while Josh Hartnett tries to figure out what the heck is going on. Also, Eva Green does crazy eyes.
I'm still not sure what I think about the first season - it's all a bit of a mess so far - but that hasn't stopped it being renewed for a second go around next year, and with more episodes to boot. Season 2 will debut in 2015, with 10 parts to continue its kind of scary story.
Reviews across the pond have been pretty stellar and viewing ratings locally were encouraging enough to renew the show early. It doesn't hurt that promos sell the sexual and supernatural elements of the show and that its origins on cable network Showtime means there's little restriction on more salacious content.
At least the cast is both excellent and starring, with Eva Green and Timothy Dalton really going for it in ways that Hartnett seems incapable of emulating. Harry Treadaway is a very creepy Victor Frankenstein but the less said about Billie Piper's Irish accent the better.
Speaking of our fair country, a second season for Penny Dreadful also means it will be returning to Ireland for another lengthy shoot. That not only means plenty of local employment but also the possiblity of bumping into Eva Green on the street (double yay!).
Penny Dreadful season 1 continues on Sky Atlantic on Tuesday nights. Season 2 will shoot in 2014 for a 2015 release.
