Or at least, the standard three episode arc and a preceding special.
THEY’RE ONLY DOING A RUDDY SPECIAL!!!
Right, that’s the inner tumblr appeased for today, let’s get down to the details.
As the third (and easily weakest) season concluded with an apparent return from the grave for series antagonist Moriarty, a fourth season of Sherlock seemed an inevitability. Doubly so, considering the astronomical stars both Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch have become since the show originally aired. And that’s to say nothing of the show’s own roaring popularity, courtesy of BBC wonder team Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat.
And before I leave you with a plethora of pleasing-yet-data-free quotes from the latter creators, all I can say is don’t expect to see that special, let alone series four, inside of 12 months. The special is only shooting in January 2015, then the full series later on that year. As Sherlock series have a tendency to run very early January every second year, I put safe money on the much hyped SPECIAL appearing on our screens sometime Summer 2015 and season four proper arriving New Year’s Day 2016.
Mark Gatiss – “Series Four! At last! It's always special to return to Sherlock but this time it's even more special as we're doing... a Special! Not only THAT, we'll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before. The whole Sherlock team are terrifically excited to return for four new adventures. The Game is on - again!"
Steven Moffat – "A special, plus a new series of three episodes - it's a record-breaking run! Of course, it's far too early to say what's coming, but we're reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you'd expect..."
