Sport Relief breaks record with £51.2 million
Last night saw the charity event raise a before unreached sum that will go to those in need in the UK and abroad

With Only Fools and Horses stars, David Beckham, Gary Lineker, David Walliams, Kylie Minogue, Patrick Kielty, Little Mix, John Bishop, Nick Grimshaw, Coldplay, Miranda Hart and Jack Whitehall on the line-up, this year’s Sports Relief ensured as many celebrities bandied together to get the public donating, and donate they did.

The TV appeal urged its audience to give as generously as possible to help aid abroad and at home, and despite recession dips people gave a record-breaking £51.2 million. It lasted six hours live on air, and included athletic competitions,musical performances, comedy skits and video excerpts of celebrities in impoverished countries such as Liberia.

Hosts David Walliams and Gary Lineker thanked the public, saying “We have to thank the British public for their generosity and to everyone who has given their time to make it the best Sport Relief yet. It's simply wonderful that Sport Relief continues to grow. The money raised will help change tens of thousands of lives at home and overseas”.
